We swapped out the Cup 2 for the P Zero R. Here are our impressions after one week.

Conclusion:

The Key Advantage of the P Zero R

In our opinion, the P Zero R is the much more well-balanced tyre for a 991.2 GT3 Touring that is primarily driven on the road.

The Cup 2 is essentially a semi-slick by design. Michelin specifically positions it for dry conditions and for enthusiastic drivers and track use. Particularly in wet conditions and at lower temperatures, Michelin itself points out its limited resistance to aquaplaning.

The P Zero R, on the other hand, aims to combine much of the sporting character of a track-oriented tyre with the everyday usability of a road tyre.

And in our opinion, that makes it a particularly good match for the Touring.

• The P Zero R comes into its own much earlier

This is particularly relevant with the 991.2 GT3.

With the Cup 2, especially on cold asphalt, you can clearly feel that the tyre has not yet reached its optimum operating window. On a winding country road in the morning, this can mean:

During the first few kilometres, the GT3 feels noticeably less confidence-inspiring on the Cup 2.

The P Zero R, by contrast, builds confidence and grip much more quickly.

For us, this is one of its greatest advantages.

• The difference in wet conditions is significant

Here, we would clearly choose the P Zero R.

The Cup 2 can certainly work in the rain – but you need to know what you are doing and adapt your driving accordingly. Michelin itself points to the tyre’s limitations in terms of aquaplaning resistance.

And particularly with a 500-hp, rear-wheel-drive GT3 Touring, we would not want to be relying on a tyre whose clear strength lies in dry-track performance when we get caught out by an unexpected rain shower.

• The P Zero R is more enjoyable on the road

At first, this may sound somewhat paradoxical.

The Cup 2 undoubtedly delivers that fantastic, razor-sharp GT3 feel, but on less-than-perfect road surfaces it is considerably more uncompromising.

The P Zero R, by contrast, feels more progressive and harmonious on a good, winding country road.

After all, the Touring is not a GT3 RS. It is meant to be fast AND enjoyable to drive.
